two leaves chased one another across the cobbled stone, muted autumnal brown and and faded orange they jumped and rolled- one taking the lead only to relinquish it moments later. stem over leaf and back again, as if they couldn't quite make up their minds which of them it was that was supposed to be coming out on top of this friendly battle. at least it looked friendly. it could very well have been all their little paper-light bodies were capable of throwing though- the equivalent of scratching and punching their way forward. they were two of only a handful left from falls change into winter, the piles that had littered the courtyard only weeks previous already decayed and dead- replenishing the earth they'd originally come from- leaving behind a very few placed sparsely over the stone. the majority of them were barely rifling in light breeze that the frigid air current brought- they tracked underfoot- sticking to the bottom of other student's soles and pressing into the stone, left all the more decrepit because of it. these two were far enough away from the mainstream of traffic though, were off to the side near the stone benches that the students had all seemed to vacate the closer time came for class to start. it was one of these benches that the leaves struck against, pausing momentarily as if lost in explanation in why they couldn't continue moving forward... a pair of auburn eyes, irises lightened only by the strength of the sun's rays in this area, tracked their stuttered movement. sneaker clad feet picked their way around the stone, toe to heel- toe to heel; fluidly, gracefully, legs bending and shifting in order to not create an overly abundant gust of air with their movements. there would be no shifting of these leaves by her feet. not today. two hands dropped to her sides, pressing the swirling fabric around her legs into stillness- fingers bunching up into the material as if to will it to listen. no, no, no. just a little closer... she paused only when the sides of her shoes were completely parallel with the bench, head cocking to the side curiously as the wind shifted against her back, lifting one corner of the darker vegetation to curl upwards with it. pretty, up close there was so much more than just orange and brown. muted tans, mochas, reds- yellow veining...
one hand loosed its grip on the skirt of her dress, fingers trailing up her hips and across her midsection, her entire arm wrapping around it, flesh pushing against the familiar leather. black curls drifted, shifted as the body bent from the waist, symmetrical from the stone which the soles of her feet were pressed so firmly to. her spine arched to accommodate, shoulder blades flattening until she could pause just barely- her nose a few inches from where the two leaves now sat still. it appeared they were done fighting, done playing. the wind beneath their proverbial and quite visceral sails had been blocked by the slight form she presented above them, in front of them. so fragile... the patterns heightened even further, her lips curling in response. they were to be re-purposed. her skirt was finally completely released as her hand darted out, gathering the leaves carefully between her fingers and bringing them even closer for inspection. she could paint these- the way the colors twined and melded to create something new. if she'd had her bag on her she would have at the very least sketched them. she stayed poised like that for a collection of heartbeats- eyes tracing the coloring and form that she held in her hands before she allowed her spin to straighten slowly- uncurling her body upright and switching the leaves from one hand into two- her arms lifting high above her head to hold the things up against the light- watching the way the beams caught the miniscule lines that twisted and turned to make up the two things she was looking at. the leaves didn't look nearly as happy, not nearly as playful as they'd been chasing eachother. her eyebrows pulled down in disquiet, twirling the two stems between her fingers and watching the way everything seemed to tilt with them. they were so thin... it was no wonder if they'd actually been fighting that was the best display they could put up. maybe they'd just been trying to get to some place of safety and ensure that their slow deaths could happen in peace, maybe they'd been fighting one another over who got that spot that they'd both seen at the same time. lips twisted, her features dropping into a kind of horrified expression. broken. the leaves had been broken...
her arms dropped slowly, eyes following the leaves with something akin to wonder as she frowned sadly down at them. they were sad, but that was okay. very slowly she lifted them again, twining the stems together and pushing them behind the over large flower she'd already twined in the hair just behind her ear. safe. they were kept safe for now at least. safe. safe. safe. her feet rotated, legs moving just slightly to let her legs sway back and forth for a minute before looking back up to the cloudless sky. she hated cold. hated winter. hated the holiday season that was waiting just around the corner that all of this led to. she liked... spring. when the air was just warm enough to kiss her skin, when the flowers sprang up in full bloom and the orchards of hogwarts began to secrete the sweet smelling fruits from within. spring was wonderful. winter was the devil. literally. she'd wanted to wear a dress today... well, she was wearing a dress today- but she'd wanted to wear just the dress. not the black socks that stretched up over her thighs that she'd had to wear- or the extra fuzzy anklet pair that she'd grabbed as well. she'd almost slid jeans on as well, and tights- any number of layers to offset the toothless bite brought about by the weather. if it was spring instead of winter she'd be watching the leaves bloom, watching the plant life come to life- not die. not watch two leaves running for cover. her hand rose, absently brushing against the leaves now tucked behind her ear, somewhat startled to find that the crowd of students had grown even from what it had been- but then those out here now were sure to have a free period. right? it was why she was here. certainly there couldn't be that many kids skipping all in one place. she turned again, someone's shoulder catching her elbow, the curse that was directed her way nowhere near as stinging as the contact. not pain. fear. hard and fast it hit her, dragging her breath from her lungs as she back-peddled away from the dark-skinned male glaring at her. her hands lifted to her chest, both of them pressing hard over her sternum as she shook her head back and forth, some string of apology leaving her lips quickly- morphing the words into some joke about how clumsy she was. whatever worked.
a brightly, if definitely fake, smile plastered to her lips as her heavily accented words smoothed with each joke that passed her lips- watching as the guy half laughed off what had originally been a definite confrontation. she didn't do well with those, she never had. well, unless she was the one to start them. her smile shifted somewhat, eyes darting back behind him at the group that had paused to wait- the group that he was turning to now with a hurriedly called acceptance of her apology. it wasn't as if her awkwardness wasn't known. her eyes watched the boys back solemnly, smile slipping from her lips the moment he turned away. her heartbeat was still uncomfortably accelerated, lips pressed into a straight line as she stepped the two feet backwards, waiting until the backs of her knees hit the stone of the bench- her body falling back with a large huff. today was just... unacceptable. she couldn't even remember the last time she'd had a cigarette- it'd been more than a week surely, she'd had to wait to get her new pack in.. but even so... as if just thinking of her need summoned the will to do so she was dipping into her pockets, pulling a small cylindrical black stick out and pressing it between her lips as she watched the crowd that had gathered disperse somewhat. plenty of them had just been meeting up with their friends to go to a separate location. at least she figured that was what happened. she lifted the edge of her wand to the cigarette, inhaling as the end sparked, sucking the air down until she could feel the smoke filling her mouth. the acridly sweet smell surrounded her, legs coming up so that she could pull her knees to her chest, free arm wrapping around them.
