Lillian had been staring at the sign for almost fifteen minutes within the wee hours of the morning before the first bus whizzed by the front of the red brick school and down the gated alley to spill the first set of kids into the well maintained football field. Being a transfer student that lived only two blocks from the school in an ancient brownstone and after telling her parents that she was a big girl and capable of walking down two blocks on her own, she watched with curiosity through her light framed glasses the already rush hour traffic whipping by before joining the rest of the clustered students within the football field bleachers for the ‘enter’ bell to buzz into the moist April air.
The closer she approached the cluster of students the harder her heart rattled inside her ribcage. Though she lost little sleep the night before the first Monday and told herself hours before that she would not get nervous, Lillian could not stop the jitters. As many of the students clustered in their groups mingling on the empty field lines Lillian did her best to just melt into the background away from the clusters but stood out more than the rest. Though there were some others students’ wearing light earth tones, Lillian was bundled within a scarf and knee length faux leather yet was still wearing her platform sandals hidden by her wide leg slacks. The pale Cali girl with her deep red hair curling over her shoulders stuck out no matter how hard she tried to melt.
When the notice bell buzzed through the chilled fall air the herd of student bodies began to filter through the double doors and the first shock of being in a public school. Unlike the private school she attended weeks before, she was greeted to metal detectors and more ‘school’ officers than she could count on her fingers hand searching book bags as those that sprung the detector like herself were once over with a wand. Following the rest of the mulling bodies towards their homerooms she was greeted by a very young woman with a southern accent as the teacher that resided within. After handing in her schedule for the teacher to sign and signing a roster with her name penned in Lillian was instructed on where her assigned locker was located and to sit where she preferred. As much as the youth could have dropped off her overcoat in her locker, the air conditioning that had yet to be turned off continued to blast its frigid air onto her reddening cheeks.
Taking a seat at the first desk closest to the door the young instructor stood next to instructing the masses to head to their homeroom, Lillian was the only soul in the classroom. Uncomfortable as she was, the girl attempted to occupy her time by looking at the now crumpled and creased schedule remembering the paths she would be taking to arrive to all of her classes.
Though her mind was busy occupied looking through the mental map she had imprinted from the student handbook on the shortest route in how to get to her classes she glanced up time to time when the students of her homeroom class began showing up. A few smiled as others too wrapped up in their conversations or own sleep deprivation did not notice the girl in the front, Lillian continued to occupy her time in hopes she was not going to have to speak out just yet on being the ‘new’ girl.
