The past month had been anything but simple. The past month and a half actually. Ever since that gala, the part of her life in which Amina had expected to be a breeze had become so overly complicated. The only thing that helped was there were people around her to take her mind off of things. Off of him. Victoria had been such a blessing. Though she wasn’t the best person to ask for advice on what to do about Gavin, she had been there when she needed her the most. For only knowing each other for such a short amount of time, Victoria was nothing short of a blessing. The first night after had been the worst, mostly because she wanted to go back to the classroom to collect the books she had so carelessly left behind. Not to mention the two sentence long essay she had been working so hard on. She wasn’t quite sure how she was going to explain to Mr. Talbott that she wasn’t going to be able to get it to him on time because she had left her book behind in a classroom with one of his house’s students who she nearly slept with. But it wasn’t a big deal, she would get it to him once she gained the courage to go back to that classroom and get the book back. Yeah, that would go over well.
Early the next morning she had put on her running clothes and made her way to the classroom, barely cracking the door open to peek inside. She wasn’t quite sure what she was expecting to see. Somehow her brain was telling her he would still be there, waiting on the floor still shirtless. Waiting for her to come back and slide right back under him where she had been the day before. But what she found was an empty room instead. No Gavin. No Gavin’s bag. And no her books. Which, no books meant no potions book for her essay that she needed to complete and no potions book for her use during her classes. Luckily she had Harland as her partner and the sweetheart he was, shared with her. And when she had an assignment to do, either Wilhelm or Victoria were kind enough to allow her to borrow theirs to finish the assignment. Unfortunately, none of them had been in time to save her from the fate of getting detention for not turning in her essay in time. That fate she sealed herself that night when she had chosen to disregard her head and nearly lay with him in that classroom. It was her fault she had lost her book and there wasn’t much she could do about it. She had hoped he might just drop it off somewhere that she would find it. Anywhere. Even attempting to make eye contact with him while in their classes together didn’t work. She wasn’t even able to plead with him to tell her where it was. It had been a month and still no sign of it. By this time, she had given up getting it back. She had others to help get her by and that was all that mattered. Plus, it was near the end of term anyways. By now, it was a little late.
The end of term spelled out horrid things for her, though. Luckily for the last month, she was able to put him out of her head during the day time. She couldn’t remember how many times she had woken up in the middle of the night to a dream about him but the day time she could control. Her focus had been on exams. She had to get prepared because she had much more to catch up on than the others did. Coming in mid-year meant Amina had to make sure she had learned the same things they had during the first half of the courses. Having her nose in her books constantly to catch up on all she needed to know was helping keep her mind off of him. Even as they sat in the classroom, feet away from each other, she could focus on her studies and keep her mind from wandering. She wasn’t sure how, but luckily, for her, graduating was more important than whatever might be between the two of them. If she failed sixth year, she would be stuck in this school for one more year which did not settle well with her. She wanted to graduate and move on with her life. He was going to have to take a back seat, even if he didn’t like it. Even if her dreams didn’t like her for it.
Today had been a particularly easy day. It had started off with a run through the pouring down rain. She had taken a back trail around the lake. She was pretty sure it was nearly a four mile run. She had been gone for nearly an hour due to her stopping at the lake side and just sitting there for quite some time. It had become her favorite thing to do. Getting soaked to the bone by the rain water was somehow soothing and sitting by the lake only made it that much better. On a few occasions, she had some of the lake inhabitants swim past her. None ever came too close, which she was sure was a good thing because those mermaids had a temper about them. She wouldn’t be surprised if other inhabitants of the lake did too. She had sloshed into the school after her run, using her wand to dry herself off before heading back to the dorms and going into a good hour-long steaming hot shower. By the time she had gotten out of there, she was a pruny, wrinkled mess but she didn’t care. It was relaxing to say the least, even after all of the warm rain drenching her for an hour before that. She was disappointed when she got back to her dorm room, drying off her sopping wet hair to realize she only had thirty minutes before her next class.
Divination. She wasn’t fond of the course, but it was different and sometimes, she just needed different. Today marked the beginning of her exams. Mostly because the professor didn’t feel like making them take all their exams at the same time. She was kind in that manner. She gave them their exam two weeks before all of the others so they would have ample amount of time on their hands to study. After the exam, they would just be spending more time on tea leaves and crystal balls. Unfortunately, her exam today was only the first part. The professor had decided to split it into two pieces because of how extensive the work would be. First up was the tea leaf reading. Second would be the crystal ball gazing along with some astrology work. Honestly, the only reason she stuck the class out was to read the stars. Astronomy was useful in that way but it was more scientific while divination delved into the wonders you could learn from the stars about the future. Something about that seemed fun, even if she didn’t believe in anything she seemed to find out from the course.
Deciding today was not the day to be late for classes, Amina quickly used her towel to dry off her hair as much as possible before changing into a pair of jean shorts, a dressy black tank top, and a pair of flats. She threw on a cropped jean jacket just to add to the flare, disregarding her school robes in general. One thing she really did enjoy about divination was the laid back attitude. Their professor didn’t care what they came dressed in as long as they were appropriate and did not speak out of turn. Using her wand and a simple spell, she pulled the remaining water out of her hair and straightened it at the same time. Looking at the clock, she had twenty minutes to get to Divination tower. At least it wasn’t too far away. Sighing softly, she picked up her shoulder bag from the floor containing all the necessary things she would need for the exam and made her way from the room. She trotted down the staircase of the girls’ dorm, out the Gryffindor Tower, and then down to the seventh floor landing where she met a whole flood of Gryffindor’s coming in from their most recent lessons. It took her a bit to shove through the group of students but once she had made it through the masses, she was at the home stretch. She half walked, half jogged to the North Tower and climbed the steps, two at a time, until she reached the spiral staircase leading up to the classroom.
She wasn’t late, but she was the last person to arrive. Slipping in the room and into her seat towards the back, Amina watched as her two teacups appeared on the table in front of her, both upside down to allow the tea time to drain and leave behind the drags. One time she wished she would actually get to drink the tea. It sounded so nice sometimes, but she only got to see the drags after the tea was gone. ”You may begin,” came the voice of the professor in the front of the room. It wasn’t quite time but she imagined since she was the last to arrive, there was no need to sit around and wait for time to pass. Shrugging, Amina flipped over her first cup, grabbed out her quill and ink and began to work on the reading of the first one.
It only took her an hour to complete the reading on both cups as well as the multiple choice questions that came with it. Somehow they were expected to know all of the different signs you could find within the drags and be able to indicate what they stood for. Luckily, that was what Amina had been studying the night before. With confidence, she replaced all of her belongings in her bag before slinging it over her shoulder and taking her paper to the front. She was in the middle of the pack for finishing time which made her feel good about it. Finishing too early meant over confidence and finishing last usually meant procrastination or far too detailed. She liked the middle of the pack in this case. Making her way down the spiral staircase, she let her mind drift for a bit. One exam down and one more to go. Crystal gazing wasn’t too hard. She had gotten that skill mastered easily enough. The star gazing however was going to be difficult if the weather did not clear up. Her hope was they would get clear skies that night to make her life easier. “Lunch time,” she muttered, a smile on her face as she began to make her way to the grand staircase. She had skipped breakfast for her run so now it was time to make up for it. Oh how she adored carbo-loading.
