Summer Break had only started a week and a half ago but already Giovanni was feeling like big changes were in the works for him. It was only a feeling, but when it came from deep within his gut he knew not to simply ignore them. The good thing about this feeling was that it felt more positive than anything. After all he had been through in his sixteen years of life, he felt he deserved it. He was sure that other kids his age had been through worse hardships then he had, but there were times he wondered what he had done to make his life go in such a different direction then every other member of his family. It wasn’t that he wanted their lifestyle, but he never been able to understand why he had always got the short end of the stick. That if he was meant for bigger and better things in his life why he had to endure the treatment he had for so long to see any glimmer of hope. Giovanni wasn’t depressed. There were times he had been, but it didn’t consume him as a whole. Just because he wasn’t depressed though didn’t meant that his outlook on life was more pessimistic then it should have been. Things just never went in his favor long enough to change it. Nor did his family ever leave him alone long enough. For people that said they despised him as much as they did, they sure made the effort to contact him whenever they felt like reminding him. He would have thought, in their position, to simply leave him alone and hope the worst in private. Not his family though. They didn’t know how to keep their mouths shut if the Dark Lord himself promised them higher ranks within his forces.
Surprisingly enough, they had been a reason for Giovanni’s current peacefulness with his surroundings. He hadn’t heard from them in over two months, which was a record for the lack of contact. He had even begun to stop dreading the day as it went on for fear of an unexpected post from his father. Besides his family’s lack of contact, other things had begun brightening his spirits. Cammie had given him more shifts at Purgatory since school was over with. The extra shifts meant extra money which meant a fuller bank vault at the end of the summer. He might even have saved enough a few weeks before school started to go shopping in Alzubra for new school items instead of the usually ratty old used ones. With more money as well, Giovanni could increase the funds he needed to put a security deposit down on an apartment next Summer after he graduated. He knew it’d be awhile before he could afford a house of his own, but having any sort of personal space would work just fine for him. Any sort of stable, personal space. He had become an expert couch surfer after his first year at Galaxia. Most of the time he was able to stay with a friend for a few weeks before having to move on to someone else. This year, however, thanks to the kindness of Cammie, he had something somewhat stable to sleep in after each day. His boss was aware of his situation and had granted him permission to sleep in a VIP room in Heaven as long as he kept things clean and removed all traces of him being there by the time the club opened. So at night Giovanni slept and during the day he moved his trunk of clothes and school supplies to one of the cleaning closets until the club had closed for the night. It wasn’t a luxurious lifestyle but it was better than not knowing how much longer he had left before having to impose on another friend. Plus the couch that had become his bed was probably more comfortable than any bed he had ever slept on.
Giovanni had woken up on it this morning a bit earlier than usual. Cammie had come to inform him that he needed to leave the room within the following two hours as a group had requested the room for some sort of private function. Understanding, he had set about doing as she asked. When he had finished, she had returned to tell him that she was giving him the day off for disrupting him. Although he tried to protest, telling her that he was the one troubling her, she would hear none of it. She encouraged him to go out and enjoy the day as he hadn’t really been able to since arriving once school had let out. It wasn’t like he didn’t want to. He had just been all about the money. But she was right. Even he needed to get out and act his age every once in awhile. Giovanni left the club a short time later, making a stop first at Gringotts to withdraw money from his account. Once he came back from it, in his pocket rested a good handful of coins to entertain himself with. Now he needed to figure out what to do with himself. He had already roamed up and down the streets of Alzubra enough in the past week. He had no interest in going down Drear Alley since that was his family’s thing and not his. Somerset wasn’t an option either since he went there once every month with the rest of Galaxia. It had taken him a good while but finally Giovanni decided on Ilfracombe island. He had only been there once last year and had learned they had finally finished the Boardwalk they had been advertising for however long. Why not spend his hard earned money on fried food and cheap games? Wandering through the streets until he reached the first sign of a road, he stood on the edge where grass met pavement and stuck out his wand. Almost instantly, the purple Knight Bus appeared and opened his doors for him. Being underage, he hadn’t been taught how to apparate so this was his only method of transportation. He might have been able to ask Harland but didn’t see the sense in troubling his friend now that he was an intern at the Daily Timestopper.
Finding a seat near the middle, Giovanni held on to a metal pole for dear life as the bus kicked into motion. Doing his best to avoid looking out the windows at the blurry background, he instead chose to look at a screw on the floor as his body swayed back and forth, almost violently at times. He was sure that he had been on the thing for several hours when the bus finally stopped, hurling him from his seat towards the very floor he had been staring at. “Git up now. Ilfracombe isle. Pay yer fee.” Glaring at the conductor, he pushed himself from the floor and dusted off his shirt. “Thanks for the help,” he muttered, shoving five galleons into the outstretched hand of the older man. Making sure his wand or coins hadn’t gone missing in the journey, he stepped off the bus once assured and took in a large whiff of the salty air. A loud blast sounded behind him as the bus disappeared. Shaking his head, Giovanni shoved his hands into his pockets and followed a group of tourists that had come to explore the very same area he had. As the Boardwalk came closer into view, he couldn’t help but to grin at the lengthy entertainment area. He could already hear the bright music coming from a carousel at the other end of the pier. The smell of funnel cakes joined the scent of sea salt and his stomach grumbled in response. He hadn’t had anything to eat at all so far. One of those fried delights may have been in order. As the group approached the entrance, Giovanni shifted around them and went out on his own to take in the sights, sound and food. Now the only question was…what was he going to do first?
