Certainly this was not Raelene’s idea of a job. She had imagined that when she came to work for the Minister in Austria, that she would get slightly more to do than what she was really given. Overall, Marlon was a great boss, and an even better guy. She certainly wouldn’t deny that she liked working for him, and not even due to his attractive face or amazing personality. Though, both of those were definitely perks to the job. He was just one of those guys that genuinely did the right thing and cared for those around him, especially his employees. But he was also a workaholic. That was normally not a big deal for Rae since she felt the same way. Her work was the most important thing that she could do in her life because it was what gave her the chance to make a difference in the world. Even though she felt that way, she also enjoyed spending time out of the office with friends and co-workers, attempting to have some sort of social life (even if she still couldn’t find any guy crazy enough to get over her work addiction to date her for longer than one day). There were a few administrative assistants that she would go out for drinks with on occasion, spend some time getting to know, et cetera. However, Marlon didn’t do that. His entire life was in this office and he made sure everything was in its place. So much so that he really didn’t care for Raelene ever helping him take care of his various number of projects. On her first day, he had pretty much made it clear that she was there only to manage the office as a whole. Take messages, greet people who came through the office, inform people when he was out. He didn’t even really care for her to manage his calendar, one of the main jobs she had when she had worked for her father in Australia.
It had been a lot to swallow when she had begun the job, but Raelene hadn’t made him any promises or guarantees that she wasn’t going to assist when given the chance. It wasn’t often that he wasn’t in the office. Bathroom breaks, sometimes he would go grab lunch with some department head’s, and occasionally he went home to grab some sleep. But usually it was him that got the office alone, especially because often times he kicked her out. Even with Christmas coming up in a week, his schedule was entirely filled up with projects, meetings, and various other things he had to take care of. It didn’t look like he would even be taking one day off during the holiday season, despite how much she kept warning him about being overworked. At least once every two weeks she warned him about working too much, not taking time to let his body rest. She had seen people be overworked and it was never a pretty sight. Yet, he continued to work nonstop. She usually sighed and moved on, continuing with her job as if they hadn’t even had the conversation and he did the same. Maybe one day he would listen, but she figured there was no point in wasting her breath. So she kept working and whenever given the chance, she would slip in and work on some of his projects, doing things that he may not necessarily realize she had done. Rae figured that he realized she was doing it since he was so anal about his work. There would be no way he wouldn’t have noticed by now that she had been helping out, speeding things up. But he had yet to say anything and until he did, until he showed that he wasn’t pleased about her assistance in the work, than she would keep doing it.
Just like she was doing now. She had been given a large stack of paperwork from other department’s that needed filing into the main office cabinets. The bulk of it was just basic paperwork. Some internship contracts that had been finalized, some performance reports that had already been finalized, expense reports that had already been approved and paid out. Normal, everyday things that was part of her job. She had been filing the paperwork when Marlon had stepped out of the office, mentioning something about a lunch meeting. “Good, you’ve been sitting in that office for far too long. Have something good,” she remarked, smiling his way as she watched the door close behind him. Getting up from the floor where she had been filing the paperwork in a lower drawer (thankfully she had chosen a pantsuit for the day rather than a skirt or dress), she checked his schedule and realized he would be gone for long enough for her to be able to get some more meaningful stuff done. She could file anytime. Instead, she moved on to other projects that had been lying around for a while. There were stacks of paperwork that had been delivered from downstairs throughout the week, mostly simple things requiring signatures, some more important acquisition forms and performance reports to be reviewed, and various other things. By now she had figured out his patterns. The things he chose to focus on first, versus the other things that he figured could wait. So she got to work. Organizing the paperwork in a way that would help speed up the process (mostly it was getting things in some logical order since generally it all came in a complete disarray), but also so it looked neater. Honestly, she couldn’t believe how messy this place could get in such a short amount of time. The amount of paperwork that came through this office was crazy. Nothing like she had seen in her previous duties, however this was the first time she had ever worked for a Minister, and the first time working in a Ministry that was wrapped up in a war.
It took a bit of time, but finally some order was coming into place. Now at least when he got his hands on it, there would be less organization that he would have to do. Honestly, who ever put most of this together needed some training. Often times, when paperwork came through the door, it looked like someone had dropped everything on the floor, and just shoved it back together in a hurry before dropping it off. Some reports had several pieces of paper, scattered throughout multiple stacks. Though, she wouldn’t have been surprised if someone had actually dropped the paperwork in the elevator on their way to deliver it. It happened when this place got busy and people had other things on their mind. But she did what she could to help out. Just as she was about to move on to another project, footsteps sounded from outside. Glancing at the clock, Rae realized it was about that time for Marlon to be finished with his meeting, so she scurried back to her spot on the floor, legs crossed, and began filing again. When the door opened, she continued to file the paperwork, not looking in his direction. “So how was lunch? Hope the mobility brought some sense into you. You know, about actually enjoying the holiday season?” she mocked, looking over at him with a grin and a raised eyebrow. She figured he had some family or friends to spend time with. He should do it. But she knew he wouldn’t. He wasn’t that kind of guy.
