OoTP Movie Discussion

Ok so I just returned from the midnight showing of OotP, and to be honest I was real nervous about it. I mean turning a 800 pg book into a film couldn't be anything short of IMPOSSIBLE. With such a huge fan base it had to kill the screenwriters and the director to cut minor things out that would certainly annoy true blood fans. However, despite the choppy scenes and the minor changes, I think that this is probably the best movie to date. Granted there were more than a few things that ticked me off, but there were also some stellar moments that made me scream my excitement in the movie theater...which I did....often.

1: Tonks was freakin awesome. Im somewhat disappointed that they didn't have a lot of her, but she was still great nonetheless.

2: Luna, or well Evana Lynch, was unbelievable. She was the exact vision of Luna right down to her radish earrings.

3: Gotta love Neville in this one. I think they really gave him a lot of growing room in this one which makes me wonder...big moment in Book 7?

4: Bellatrix Lestrange + Helena Bonhem Carter = A DAMN MASTERPIECE

5: The DA meetings were quite good

6: Umbridge was so damn Umbridgy that I wanted to jump through the screen and strangle her right in front of those pretty little kitten plates.

7: "I'm sorry Professor, but I must not tell lies."

8: Fred and George were wicked.

9: Thestrals were kickass, and I really wanted them to trample over Cho Chang.

10: The subtle little clues that Ginny and Harry would definitely be snogging each other by Half Blood Prince. Nice touch in the DA meeting when she gives him that little glance over her shoulder.


A few annoying things:

1: The Prophecy was slaughtered

2: Fred and George lost their BEST lines

3: Neville finds the RoR not Dobby

4: Too little Tonks and Sirius

5: Too much jumping from scene to scene

6: Grawp comes off too adorable at first and I think Hermione wanted to shag him.

7: Sirius does not die from the AVADA KEDAVRA spell. WTF?

8: Not enough Helena Bonhem Carter moments. She was too damn good to be back burner.

9: No hospital scenes.

10: Why couldn't Moody just hand Harry the paper with 12 Grimmauld Place on it? Was it really crunch time on the movie where they had to make him stomp the ground with his walking stick?


All in all I really enjoyed the film. It goes from humorous to emotional within seconds, and really struck me as the best one to date. What did you all think?

Unfortunately, thanks to mine and my dads conflicting work schedules, we can't see the movie until at least friday but I feel as if they are going to want to wait till the crowd dies down x.x

umm Evan, hate to burst your bubble, but Sirius didn't get ak'd in the book either. All it says was that a jet of light hit him in the chest. It never specifies what color the light is either.

Umm Yeah I know he doesnt get AK'd in the book. I've only read it A million times. Thats why it pissed me off that they used it in the movie to show that he died instead of explaining the veil.

Actually the more I think about it JKR had a lot of say in the final battle scene so if she allowed them to use the AK spell to kill Sirius I'm guessing he is really dead. So sad really.

I saw the movie at midnight too! It was amazing!

I absolutely LOVED the movie! I, like Evan, went with three of my friends to go see it last night at midnight. I agree with everything he said. All and all it was amazing, but there were definitely a couple of parts I wish they hadn't screwed around with. Also, in the battle scene, I wish there had been more action. It seemed kind of tame to me. I can only hope the battle at Hogwarts in the next movie will outdo this one.

I thought all the actors (once again) did an amazing job with their roles. Imelda Staunton (Umbridge) was excellent and really portrayed the character right down to it. I was sitting there with my boyfriend who kept expressing his dislike for her outloud...even to the point where he wished he could jump into the screen and slap her. Daniel Radcliffe did a semi-decent job of showing the beginning of Harry's angst with the world. I think he could have definitely upped it a bit since HP was alot more angrier in the books so hopefully he'll have it for the next movie.

I wished they could wouldn't have left out where the Weasleys turned the main hall into a marsh. I thought that would have been great, but the whole fireworks fiasco was pretty decent. Sirius' death also bugged me. I think its pretty much obvious that he didn't die with the curse.

Still, I thought it was great and it really built up my anticipation for the next one.

So.. we went to see it last night. And I'm a Potter dork, but I've only read the books once. I just can't sit and read things twice when I know whats going to happen.

Yeah.. anyways. Loved the movie. But I agree with Evan, it had to be hard to make it into a movie and not have it be 4 hours long, so you're going to lose some things. Which is fine.

Hated Umbridge! Omg.. my bf the whole time was doing the same thing Kay, and he's never read the books. I told him just imagine how it was to read the book, and not fling it across the room at how utterly horrid she was.

I didn't like Cho at all in this one. I mean, I know she didn't mean to tell.. but still. I didn't like her.

I also wish the battle scene at the end had been better. The effects were cool.. I'll give them that. But it all seemed very slow to me.

I also didn't like that they only showed the HQ like twice.. and you never got to 'sit in' on the meetings. So nothing was really explained. We read the books, but my bf hadn't so he was a bit confused. Especially about Miss Fig.

All in all.. and amazing movie!

ok.. i loved it, although i do have one question, that hopefully someone can answer. During the last battle scene, wtf was with the turning into smoke? I mean, it was a cool effect, but i'm still confused as to what's going on with that.
